Her daughters, unable to rescue her or bear the silent rebuke of her suffering have long since fled to the ends of the earth. Each has lived a life in perpetual flight from the density of her inner retreat—from the rays of her inverted sun sucking in the lives with the voracious appetite of a dwarf star. Approaching her, they become balls of liquid metal—mercurial—unpredictable in their moods and sudden departures.

Insurgent (Divergent #2) by Veronica Roth.
YA Fiction
3 stars out of 5

Warning: Spoilers

This is all my humble opinion so bear with me.
As a sometimes critical reader of YA fiction, I was impressed by this book. It definitely was hard to put down at times which is a good indication of a well put together novel (unless it’s an awful train wreck that you can’t bear to look away from). I’ve heard some complaints about the lack of action in the story and how it’s rather slow, but do remember that this is a second novel in a trilogy. It’s this is a common occurrence. The first novel sets the tone and grabs the reader’s attention, the second is usually used to give out necessary information to piece important ends together, and the third is again action packed with the finale. So a slower second was not a surprise.
Pros: To be honest, in the series I am completely flabbergasted by Tris’ “no regrets” attitude. It’s something fresh. Most often in YA fiction, females tend to care about everyone and everything. The emotional caregiver role is dumped on them again and again. Tris can be blunt and unforgiving; a very human and realistic characteristic. She is not sorry for everything she does, she makes big mistakes, and she is human through and through. Also, Tris does do some sneaking around behind Four’s back. Very crafty, that one.
Cons: The book does follow the typical rise and fall of a young adult romance novel; the relationship between Four and Tris is rocky at some parts but it ultimately works out in the end. I didn’t expect anything less from picking a book up from this section. Plot wise was a little slow, but I mentioned that beforehand.

People, I have discovered, are layers and layers of secrets. You believe you know them, that you understand them, but their motives are always hidden from you, buried in their own hearts. You will never know them, but sometimes you decide to trust them.

#sorry to all those who follow

I keep thinking about this river somewhere, with the water moving really fast. And these two people in the water, trying to hold onto each other, holding on as hard as they can, but in the end it’s just too much. The current’s too strong. They’ve got to let go, drift apart.

Maybe they didn’t want you to realize that every civilization has its weakness. There’s always one thing we depend on. And if someone takes it away all that’s left is some story in a history class.
